Game rules

Here we list some possible rules by which to play Hazard Cards:

Top Trumps
All the cards are dealt out as equally as possible to the (2-5) players. The object of the game is to reduce your opponents cards to zero. Pick a category that you think might compare favourably and if you have a higher value, you win the opponents card. If you lose, you lose the card and your opponent gets to choose the next category. Won cards are placed at the bottom of your deck. A draw results in the drawn cards being placed in a stack to be won on the next card. The winner of the next comparison gets to choose.

Happy Families
This game is played like the classic Quartet Game, which is similar to the Authors game played in the U.S. and Happy Families played in the U.K. The aim is to collect and declare "books" of four of a kind. All the cards are dealt out as equally as possible to the (2-5) players. A turn consists of asking a player for a card of a certain series. If the player has it, he must give it to you and your turn continues. If not, the turn passes to the player you asked. You must have a card of the same series as the card you asked for. A player completes a book when he has all four cards of a series. Completed books are set aside. The game continues until all the cards are formed into books, and whoever gets the most books wins - or you can score one point per book and play to a target score.

"Fish"
Like in Happy Families you have to collect books, e.g. a series of the letters from A to I. Each player is dealt seven cards, the rest of the cards are spread at the table. A turn consists of asking a player for a card of a certain series. If the player has it, he must give it to you and your turn continues. If not, he says FISH, which means that you must grab a card from the table. You must have a card of the same series as the card you asked for. A player completes a book when he has all four cards of a series. Completed books are set aside. An additional twist would be to allow for asking for cards with number 1, 2, 3 or 4 on them. This makes the collecting of a series much harder. The winner is the player with the most books.

"Black Man"-rules
This game is played like Happy Families, but this time with the Joker. All the cards are dealt out as equally as possible to the (2-5) players. You pick a random card from the opponent on your right. What you have to do now is to start collecting books, (e.g. letter-series - e.g. G: Chemical Industry, G1-G4) The winner is the player with the most books. Too bad if you get HIV! Just pass the buck...

"Quick" (send in by Thomas Silkjaer)
You can only use one category per player, and it is only fun for 3+ players. If you are 3 players, you lay 2 coins on the middle of the table (4 players, 3 coins etc). Then you deal the cards between the players, so that everyone has 4 cards. Now its about getting a book (e.g. all four cards of a series with the same letter). To get a series, all players will - at the same time - pass one card on, to the player on his left side. this is done, untill one of the players pick up the coin, now the rest of the players have to take a coin aswell, but one player cant get any, and has lost the game. It can be really fun, as when you get a series, you can discretly take a coin and the other players just keep on playing a little before they realise that there is a person who already has a series ...

We will make a competition in order to find the best Hazard Cards game rules. Feel free to invent new rules now!

The web game:
In 'Play' you can play Hazard Cards online. The rules are the same as the Top Trumps-rules, except that now you play against a computer. You click at the category which you think has the highest value, and the computer will then compare with its corresponding category. If you want to read more about the disaster, you click the text at the bottom of the card.
